Lunch & Learn, For Want of a Railroad: The Battle of Wise’s Forks

Wednesday, September 13th at 11:30am

History has relegated the Battle of Wise’s (Wyse) Forks, March 1865 near Kinston, to little more than an insignificant skirmish during the final days of the Civil War. Indeed, most histories mention it not at all. Wade Sokolosky will discuss the battle and his latest book, “To Prepare for Sherman’s Coming”: The Battle of Wise’s Forks, March 1865, which erases this misconception and elevates this battle and its related operations to the historical status it deserves. Horace Mewborn will expand on the battles of the Civil War in eastern North Carolina, covering Wise’s Forks, New Bern, Goldsboro and Kinston. Lunch & Learn starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Chelsea Restaurant, 335 Middle Street, New Bern. The cost is $18 for Historical Society members and $20 for non-members; a delicious Chelsea lunch is included. Advance reservations must be made by calling the New Bern Historical Society at 252-638-8558, or can be ordered here. Lunch choices are: Salmon Bruschetta topped with tomato, basil, garlic, and Parmesan cheese or Sautéed Chicken Breast with lemon garlic veloute sauce. A veteran of New York’s Tin Pan Alley, Ray Henderson was a prolific composer of American show tunes, movie themes, and popular music. Best known for being one-third of the Henderson-Desylva-Brown Trio, the group composed some of the biggest Broadway and popular hits in the late 1920’s. After Desylva left the group in 1931 Henderson and Brown continued to work together on Broadway shows, including “Hot-Cha” and “Strike Me Pink.” He also worked with Jack Yellen, Billy Rose, Ted Koehler and others during his career. Timothy Maddox received his Masters in Music Education from Bob Jones University and he currently serves as an instructor and special events coordinator at Lenoir Community College in Kinston.  He has been playing piano since he was 7 and has been privileged to travel nationwide performing for numerous vocal groups.  Timothy lives in New Bern where he is actively involved in the local theater community as both musical director and pianist.
