U-Boats off the Outer Banks: Shadows in the Moonlight: Lore Lecture

Sunday, November 12 at 2:00 pm

During WWII the German navy used a cipher machine called Enigma to encipher and decipher messages. The machine was onboard of the U-85, one of the U-boats operating off the coast of the Outer Banks, and went down with the ship when it sank in April of 1942. The Enigma machine was not recovered and remained entombed in the U-boat until 2001 when it was found by a team of local divers. In this fascinating program oral history program, Bunch describes his first-hand efforts in the research, diving, discovery, and recovery of this machine. The presentation also outlines how the Enigma Machine works and its significance in World War II. The recovered Enigma machine is currently on display at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum where it was donated by the dive team and the German Government.

Specializing in oceanography, Jim Bunch earned degrees in marine biology from the University of Miami and from Old Dominion Institute of Oceanography. He worked as an oceanographer for the federal government for many years. Currently, he is Recreational Diving Chair for NOAA’s Monitor Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council. As part of his work, he recently explored the three u-boats located just off the NC coast, and is involved in planning their future placement of the Register of Historic Places. An active scuba instructor for 20 years, he has certified hundreds of divers interested in visiting North Carolina shipwrecks. He received the Scuba Schools International Pro5000 award in 1994 for making 5000 dives. He is the author of three books, the 1986 Diving the U-85, the 2003 U-85 Shadow in the Sea, a Diver’s Reflections, and the newly-released U-Boats off the Outer Banks. Shadows in the Moonlight Books will be available for purchase.

Parenting With Love and Leadership

Sunday, October 8 from 2:00pm to 5:30pm

Children depend on parents for the two L-words of Love and Leadership. In today’s parenting culture, Love is often weakened by well-intentioned enabling, and Leadership is weakened by the equally well-intentioned attempt to be “popular” with one’s children. In this entertaining and thought-provoking talk, John tells parents how to deliver these two essential parenting ingredients in ways that strengthen children emotionally and help them grow into responsible, compassionate citizens. John helps parents understand how to best deliver love and leadership from toddlerhood right on through the teenage years. He introduces important and provocative concepts, such as Why Children Love to Be Ignored. John also addresses how the subtle but substantive changes of the adult female’s role in parenting is changing our culture…and not for the better.

Lunch & Learn, Hoi Toiders, Whistle Pigs and Kelvinators, Talkin’ Tarheel with Walt Wolfram

Thursday, October 12 at 11:30am

If you’ve ever spotted a whistle pig or know what a Kelvinator is, then you just might be fluent in Tar Heel. If you pronounce Buies Creek, Cashie River and Chicamacomico like a native, then you might be fluent in Tar Heel. The linguistic diversity and dialects of North Carolina will be the topic of the October 12 Lunch & Learn at the Chelsea Restaurant at 11:30 am. Linguist Walt Wolfram will share stories, sights, and sounds from his book Talkin’ Tar Heel: How Our Voices Tell the Story of North Carolina (UNC Press, 2014). North Carolina’s dialects go beyond the stereotypical Southern twang. Wolfram explores the distinct dialects of African-Americans, recent Spanish-speaking immigrants, mountain residents, the Cherokee and Lumbee, and the Hoi Toiders – “High Tiders,” a nickname for Outer Banks natives.

Walt Wolfram is William C. Friday Distinguished University Professor at North Carolina State University, where he also directs the North Carolina Language and Life Project. He has pioneered research on social and ethnic dialects since the 1960s and published more than 20 books and over 300 articles. He is also co-author of Hoi Toide on the Outer Banks: The Story of the Ocracoke Brogue.

African American Heritage Tour

Sunday, October 15 from 2:00pm to 3:00pm

Tryon Palace’s African American Heritage Tour explores the history and heritage of more than 20 historic locations around downtown New Bern. New Bern served as a haven for many African Americans during the early stages of the Civil War after Union forces occupied New Bern in 1862. The city’s African American population was the majority population in the area from 1800 to the 1930s. Conditions like this allowed the African American community to thrive in New Bern. Many of the city’s houses and public buildings were built by African American craftsmen, while the city was also home to some of the oldest African American congregations in the Southeast. The Tryon Palace African American Heritage Tour will be offered March to November on the third Sunday of each month. Tours begin at the Waystation, located on the corner of George and Pollock streets, at 2 p.m. Tickets are included with the purchase of a One Day Pass, or may be purchased separately. Wings Over Bridgeton

Saturday, October 21 to Sunday, October 22

Seaplane fly-ins, also known as “splash-ins” occur when numbers of pilots and families decide to fly to a specific area for a gathering. The aircraft are spectacular to watch as they land and take off from the water’s surface but more than that, they spend much of the day doing flying exhibitions. When not flying the aircraft are open for view to the public and pilots delight in answering questions about their craft. It’s an up close and personal experience that is more than rare in eastern North Carolina and uncommon in the rest of the country. It’s fun to compare the different kinds of seaplanes, some with propellers in the front like normal planes and some and some have props mounted on the rear acting as “pushers”. Styles range from airplanes on floats to flying boats! Most are amphibians which can operate from land OR sea!

At the Gallery: WC Handy

Saturday, October 21 at 6:30pm

The “Father of Blues,” William Christopher Handy was born in 1873 in Florence, Alabama. The son and grandson of Methodist ministers, his father opposed Handy playing secular music, and would only pay for organ lessons. Some accounts say Handy joined a minstrel group at the age of 15, performing in the traveling show until they disbanded. He received a degree in 1892 from the Teachers Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1892, which he used to teach in between bands and minstrel groups he joined. In 1912 Handy released “Memphis Blues,” widely considered to be the first blues song ever published. An integral part to the 20th-century popularization of the blues, other hits by Handy include “St Louis Blues,” “Beale St Blues,” and “Yellow Dog Blues.” Jon Shain is a veteran singer-songwriter who combines improvised piedmont blues with swing, ragtime, and bluegrass. He released four albums and toured with his Chapel Hill based group “Flying Mice” and their spin off “Wake,” before returning to blues and folk roots in his solo career. He has recorded as a guest artist with Jim Avett, Greg Humphreys,  and Danna Kletter, and his playing his been featured in documentary films and shows. He currently has eight studio albums and is working towards his ninth, a duet album with Joe Newberry.

Lunch & Learn, For Want of a Railroad: The Battle of Wise’s Forks

Wednesday, September 13th at 11:30am

History has relegated the Battle of Wise’s (Wyse) Forks, March 1865 near Kinston, to little more than an insignificant skirmish during the final days of the Civil War. Indeed, most histories mention it not at all. Wade Sokolosky will discuss the battle and his latest book, “To Prepare for Sherman’s Coming”: The Battle of Wise’s Forks, March 1865, which erases this misconception and elevates this battle and its related operations to the historical status it deserves. Horace Mewborn will expand on the battles of the Civil War in eastern North Carolina, covering Wise’s Forks, New Bern, Goldsboro and Kinston. Lunch & Learn starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Chelsea Restaurant, 335 Middle Street, New Bern. The cost is $18 for Historical Society members and $20 for non-members; a delicious Chelsea lunch is included. Advance reservations must be made by calling the New Bern Historical Society at 252-638-8558, or can be ordered here. Lunch choices are: Salmon Bruschetta topped with tomato, basil, garlic, and Parmesan cheese or Sautéed Chicken Breast with lemon garlic veloute sauce. Both are served over rice pilaf with seasonal vegetables and come with salad, dessert, bread, iced tea, and coffee.

A veteran of New York’s Tin Pan Alley, Ray Henderson was a prolific composer of American show tunes, movie themes, and popular music. Best known for being one-third of the Henderson-Desylva-Brown Trio, the group composed some of the biggest Broadway and popular hits in the late 1920’s. After Desylva left the group in 1931 Henderson and Brown continued to work together on Broadway shows, including “Hot-Cha” and “Strike Me Pink.” He also worked with Jack Yellen, Billy Rose, Ted Koehler and others during his career. Hits include “Animal Crackers in my Soup,” Five Foot Two Eyes of Blue,” “Keep Your Sunny Side Up,” and “Sonny Boy.” Patrick  Bliss is a classically trained musician and vocalist, with a Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance from High Point University in High Point, NC.  Interested in music most of his life, he only started taking his vocal abilities seriously in 2004, his junior year in high school.  Since then, he has performed for packed houses, earned national awards, composed music, directed ensembles, taught voice, and has pursued his professional career in every way possible.  Despite his classical background, however, he is pursuing a career in popular music and is now a gigging musician with a growing repertoire of original material.  Patrick is currently Special Events and Annual Fund Coordinator at Lenoir Community College in Kinston. Timothy Maddox received his Masters in Music Education from Bob Jones University and he currently serves as an instructor and special events coordinator at Lenoir Community College in Kinston.  He has been playing piano since he was 7 and has been privileged to travel nationwide performing for numerous vocal groups.  Timothy lives in New Bern where he is actively involved in the local theater community as both musical director and pianist.

Ed Bearss – A Historian Reflects on the Civil War

Thursday, July 13th from 11:00am to 12:30pm

An American treasure, Civil War historian Ed Bearss was ready to speak to interested fans across eastern NC in January but the weather intervened. Now he is making a trip just to New Bern on Thursday, July 13. If you have interest in history, the Civil War, or exciting stories and characters, be sure to see this legend. This is the eleventh in a series of annual visits for Bearss, one of the leading historians and experts on the Civil War. He will present his own reflections after more than three-quarters of a century of study and teachings on the subject. Many times his lectures have been delivered while hiking through the historic battlefields. This presentation will be held at 11:00 am at the Cullman Performance Hall at the North Carolina History Center. The cost of lecture will be a tax-deductible donation of $10 with all proceeds going to support the New Bern Battlefield Park. Reservations with donations for the January lecture will be honored. Ed Bearss is a United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II, a military historian, an author known for his work on the American Civil War and World War II eras, and a popular tour guide of historic battlefields. He served as Chief Historian of the National Park Service from 1981 to 1994 and is now Chief Historian Emeritus. This Congressional Gold Medal nominee continues to share his vast knowledge. Civil War students clamor to hear him speak. At 90+, Bearss leads numerous tours—traveling as many as 200 days per year—around the United States, the Pacific, and Europe. He has been named by Smithsonian Magazine as one of the “35 Who Made A Difference,” along with the likes of Maya Angelou, Steven Spielberg, and Sally Ride. Uncommon Chairs

Saturday, June 10th at 9:00am to Sunday, September 10th at 5:00pm

This exhibit brings together 75 ladder back, or “common” chairs from the Tar-Roanoke River region of North Carolina, most of them made between 1800-1925. Guest curators Hiram Perkinson and Mark R. Wenger present these beautiful examples of early craftsmanship to illustrate the distinct chair-making traditions found in the counties clustered around the North Carolina-Virginia state line. The curators have grouped the chairs by county of origin or by a shared defining feature. Once found in households in every economic bracket, common chairs were relegated to working class households over the course of the 19th century. The exhibit highlights how simple things like wood choices and turning patterns illuminate how these common chairs were used in courtrooms and kitchens, parlors and porches. They are a legacy of craftsmanship to be enjoyed by every North Carolinian.

At the Gallery: Lerner and Loewe

Saturday, May 20th at 7:00pm

Lerner and Loewe performed by Mollye Otis, Michael Vetrano and Erin Stowe. As the world gets crazier, music can offer a lovely, romantic refuge.  A new series paying tribute to American composers, the brainchild of Steve Kelly and Craven Arts Council & Gallery Executive Director Carol Tokarski, takes you back to quieter, more melodic times. Tickets are available at the Bank of the Arts and online. Alan Jay Lerner attended the Juilliard School of Music, and then graduated from Harvard College, where Leonard Bernstein was a contemporary.  By age 15, Frederick “Fritz” Loewe was getting considerable attention as a promising young piano virtuoso.  He did not meet with musical success until he met Alan Jay Lerner, seventeen years his junior; and from that time Loewe worked with only Lerner.  From the start of their partnership, Lerner wrote the books of the shows as well as the lyrics; and Loewe wrote the music. Lerner and Loewe wrote such musical classics as “Brigadoon,” “My Fair Lady” and “Camelot,” as well as the film “Gigi.”  Excerpts from their catalogue include “Almost Like Being in Love,” “They Call the Wind Mariah,” “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “On the Street Where You Live,” “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face,” “I Remember It Well” and “Camelot.”
